I would have to say a Toyota or a Honda. I have a Saturn SL1 though that I beat up, bought for really cheap and have put over 30,000 miles on it. I have never had a problem with it and would probably take a Saturn if I ever got the chance again. The big think is consider how its been treated. If the car only got the oil changed every 15K miles it probably wouldn't be super reliable forever. My say, would be a Saturn.

It could be hard to find a reliable vehicle for 2K, but sounds like it's more about the 2K than the car.
Narrow to some car choices and check out this site:
http://www.craigslist.org/.
You can find just about anything you want here.

Try a cavalier or an escort, cheap and easy to repair. Take care of some civics as they might be raced.

try to find a fairly good pick up truck, more versatile than a car and easier to find in good condition for your price.
