No, it should be required period. Maybe just not military service, but community service.

If all young people at a certain age were required to put in a period of time for community / military service, by now New Orlean could have been cleaned up and well on it's way to rebuilding. Or people could go to college and have a replayment program on their students loans by working in literacy training or teaching ESL. There time could even be served while they are working at a FT job. Maybe make it 2 years Ft or 5 years PT, so they can work evenings or weekends putting in their time.

Other could build low income housing, help out in disasters, etc

Many kids have no idea how good they have it, many kids have no idea what path to take after high school. This could be very enlightening for them.

How about mandatory community or military service? Everyone would have to serve for 2 years when they turn 18, with no exceptions. I would support that.

I think that would require some Constitutional Amendment or something like that. I'm not against the idea, as long as the individual can choose where they can serve (branch, job, etc.) .

There are several other countries that already do this. Germany and Isreal, for example, mandate at least 2 years of service after high school for males. IDK about females and mandatory service.

No. It should be vice versa. Finishing school(high school or colleges), then military for two years. This is mandatory in most countries in asia continents, such as South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. If you are not in school, you must join Military for two years. Perhaps this way, will able to keep more kids in school, until all graduated.

No, but I might consider it if an option for national service ie cleaning up inner cities, helping the homeless, etc. was offered along side the military part. Also, if someone chose the military he/she should get to choose what branch.

Not necessarily. But like Robert Heinlein wrote about in 'Starship Troopers' (the book, not the really bad movie), I think it should definitely be a pre-requisite to voting

Man a hard question...Maybe if they had guard duty everday for 5 years like I have. I built up so much intuition and read so many books in my freetime. I actually astral projected for the first time sleeping in a watchtower in the middle east. HA

Just what Bush could use, an unlimited supply of people to send to their deaths in his foolish resource war in Iraq.
