to prevent tragedies like myself....is this a good thing.

It's good to raise awareness. A large number of people are misinformed about schizophrenia and tend to associate it with the stereotypical Jekyll and Hyde type of character. Taking action to raise people's awareness can only be a good thing.

However, it's not a preventable disease. There is medication which can control the symptoms but (as yet) nothing to prevent it.

We haven't reach the prevention stage with mental illnesses. We still don't understand what causes them. Once we figure that out, a cure isn't far behind.

The best thing you can do is to stay on your medication. See your doctor for your followup checks. It can be managed.

I am not sure that there is any prevention it is usually genetically passed, I think that it can be controlled but not prevented.

You can not prevent the mental disorder from happening...it is heriditary.
