Mostly I just get ideas from cooking shows. I also get good tips. Most of the recipes on the shows deal with ingrediants I can't afford. But I will substitute a lot of times with different cuts of meats and such. I love Rachel Rays 30 minute meals. Most of the stuff she cooks is easily affordable and I like the fact that the recipes are things you can cook in a very short time.

It's rare to be so desperate to 'watch' a cooking show at my house! The segments on a variety of programs from Letterman to Good Morning America & local programming often display a variation of something else I wouldn't eat unless dillusional & dillerious from hunger. In fact, I can't remember EVER being swayed to attempt anything featured! I do believe there are some important subliminal ideas which might be employed but certainly not consciously. I would admit that when Penelope Cruise is in the kitchen, I'm much more interested. To a lesser degree 'Nygella Bites' & then it's void.[+2;-)]

The answer depends on the level of skill the cook has. If you are a novice, you would likely want to follow the demonstration as close as possible. If you are more skilled and experienced - the general idea is where you would start, adding your own touches during the creation process.

I love watching Good Eats and get a lot of good ideas just from watching. When I see a recipe that is soo mouthwatering, I have to follow the recipe down to the letter.

Both. If it's a dish that I'm totally unfamiliar with, I'll make it first as is and then if it's good put my spin on it.
