does anyone have any clues as to how i have caused this and any solutions please.

Yeah sounds like the drivers have been uninstalled, some common ones are ac'97, nvidia nForce sounddrivers and Realtek, if you uninstalled any of those simply find out your soundcard and reinstall the latest drivers.

Which should be on any driver cd's that came with the pc, or simply search yahoo for it.

You deleted your sound card driver. Download the driver from the company who makes the sound card. It could be worse. My friend uninstalled his video card driver.
