I live in Ohio and I just got a phone call from my local jail from my stepdad who is in jail now b/c he and my mom were driving on expired tags. What is the penalty for that? I know its a fine, but why are they in jail? and for how long?

they must have done something to tick off the patrol officer they don't usually arrest for something minor like expired tags, usually just a ticket

People don't go to jail for expired tags. There is something else going on here. Expired tags is usually, in most states, a fix it ticket. Meaning you get a ticket but if you show up in court with proof that you fixed it, then you may be charged a small fine (ie. $100). But, in many cases, merely fixing it will get the fine eliminated or reduced.

I dont know about Ohio, but in Alabama all you get for an expired tag is a ticket. And if you go get your tag renewed before your court date or the ticket is due they will usually drop the ticket and all you have to pay is court cost.
If they are in jail they done something worse than driving with an expired tag.

No one goes to jail for expired tags period. In California if you are pulled over for expired tags then you would receive a "fix-it ticket". Then you have like ninety days to get the tags and you a pay a $5.00 fine. Maybe there was drugs or alcohol or an outstanding warrant involved?

Traffic ticket only 99% of the time. Even if your step-dad was taken in for bail on a traffic ticket (usually done when the driver has no ID or way to verify his ID)..thats usually only $50-$100. And ONLY on the driver....your mom wouldnt be in jail too because your step dad was driving a car with expired tags.

They are not telling you everything.

The penalty's usually a fine. Unless of course they find out you have a warrant or ticket/ court date past due... Those usually aren't long after court appearance or bail..

A little info here...you CAN be brought in on traffic charges, to post a cash bond. That way, the city gets their money if you don't show up to pay the fine (Fail to Appear) if a citation is issued and you're cut loose.

that is a ticket penalty. their in jail for something else. oustanding unpaid parking tickets or seomthing. usually you get pulled over, handed a ticket. if the cop is a real bastard then they can legally have your car impounded but that's a rarity.
