My husband was given paternity leave starting the day my children were born. It is not anything that he had to request. He recieved 10 days starting day of birth. It was very nice to have him home. We got paternity leave for both of my children who were born at differnent bases.

First of all, the military doesn't give paternity leave. Depending on where he is and his unit's status, he can put in a leave form at any time. If he has enough days saved and it's approved, he can take up to 30 days of charged leave to be with mom and baby. I suggest if she's due any day, that he gets the papers in. Even then, he might not be there for the birth. Also, if he's deployed, his chances of coming home are slim. It would depend on the mission.
Good luck!!

Since he is in the Army he can put in his DA31 at any time with open dates. Once the baby is born then he can fill in the dates and go on leave. That is if his command is willing to let him which they usually are, unless of course he is deployed overseas right now.

Leave is contingent on the needs of the service particularly during time of war. So.. I would have requested leave three months ago. I wouldn't have expected to get it but you can always ask.

well if he has the days accrued, then he can request ordinary leave to start around the time she is expected to have the baby...but if he is overseas then when she goes to the hospital to deliver the baby, she can ask her doctor to contact the RED CROSS and they will in turn contact his unit and of course state that his presence is requested by spouse...blahblahblah...if he is deployed...unfortunately mission comes first...that will depend soley on his command...

such time off is never a guarentee, and if he is currently deployed, the chances are about nil. It is STRICTLY at Command Discretion, it is NOT required and can in fact be denied for any reason.
