I drive a car with a power convertible top. What is the ettiquete for removing said top? Is it only when you leave the spot you were just parked in? I take it down sometimes at stoplights, and people look at me funny. The other day I saw a lady removing hers on the side of the freeway.

I say, drop your top when the mood strikes you. I wish I lived in a climate that would allow for owning a convertible more logical. Our summer season just isn't long enough to warrant a ragtop, but do I LOVE THEM!!! I'm jealous.
I'd rather you put the top down at intersections, stop lights (as long as you don't hold up traffic :) ) the side of the highway or a parking lot, than NOT put your top down at all!
Its a convertible for a reason..... bask in the sun girl!

We have a convertible and drop the top whenever we can. I don't oftentimes drop the top at a stoplight unless I know the light just turned red - I don't want to hold traffic because the power top is coming down. But it only takes 30 seconds (I read the manual geek that I am) so let the sun kiss you. There is nothing like it and I can't imagine not having one.

Some better cars allow you to drop the top whilst moving at up to 25 mph, that is so you don't hold up traffic if you start to put down the top at stoplights and the lights change.
Ideally you should start and finish your journey with the top in the same position. Stopping by the freeway is dangerous unless you are broken down and possibly illegal

I don't think there is a rule or unwritten rule about convertable toplessness in this country.

I say take the top down anytime it's not raining....oh and when the car is not moving :P

If these people are looking at you oddly when you take it down at a stop light, I think they are just jeaous that they don't have a care that transforms into an autobot. They might think you are a bit snobbish flaunting your wealth about, but I still think they are robots in disguise themselves.

You should not hold up traffic while putting your top down. Either do it in the parking lot, or pull over off the side of the road.

I say you`re fine ... do it at a stop light!

However, I`d probably pull over BEFORE getting on the freeway to take your top down. It can be dangerous on the shoulder.

Anytime a woman removes her top is a good time. Like some of the other answerers said, as long as you are in control, and you are safely doing it, who cares?

Make sure you're stopped when you lower the top.

Given that turn signals tend to be omitted or ignored by drivers, I doubt anyone would have issues with you dropping your car's top.

prob. just while parked in the parking lot. I think mostly its just distracting, thats why ppl were looking. Could also be a little dangerous so maybe before you start driving. Sounds like fun.

I say it is totally your decision, as long as you are in control of the vehicle. If someone is looking maybe they are just interested in the operation of the top or something - or maybe you are really cute????
