I have a miniature Dachshund that I've had for 15yrs and love to death. We got her when I was 10 yrs old and able to give her lots and lots of attention. (I am definitely on board with the fact that you should not get a dog unless you can give it attention). However, now I'm 25 and I work during the day and can't even dream of giving her away after all these years. She was staying at home with my mother (who works nights) until yesterday when she got out of the backyard and got lost. Thank Goodness a nice couple found her and kept her safe. Until I'm able to repair the fence at my mother's house so she won't get out again, I'll be keeping her with me at my apt. With the limited space, how can I keep her from being lonely while I'm at work from 8-5:30. She's really old, so I don't know if she'd be interested in playing with toys. I've also found that she's bothered by younger dogs. Sorry so long.

Well, all dogs like treats. The pet stores sell what I consider to be the everlasting gobstopper of dog treats. It is a bone filled with a peanut buttery type substance, and my two dogs love them! They will work at them for days, and not care about anything else. You can also buy what is called a "Kong" and fill it with something yourself... It might not be a substitution for human interaction, but it will keep her occupied and happy. Hope that helps

You can hide some treats around the house (under pillows, inbetween furniture etc) so when you leave she'll be busy hunting for them for a while. You can also leave her a hollow bone with some treats in it (I like putting bread and peanut butter) and my dogs usually stay busy with that for 1-2 hours. Also the tv and radio help her not to feel lonely - you may try leaving some of your clothes on the floor for her so she can cuddle with them (your smell comforts them).

my dog actually has seperation anxiety... but what we do is we a)have pills for him, so he's not all worried/scared when we're gone, b) leave the TV on for him. also, i've heard of people calling home to talk to their dogs, or at least having a recording of their voice talking, so the dog isnt so lonely. you could always see if a friend or soemone could stop in at your house while you're gone to check on the dog or play with it. [actually, i used to get paid for just checking on my neighbor's animals while they were at work and stuff. wasn't paid much, but it was actually kind of enjoyable. maybe you have a neighbor that you could get to do that?]

you know it's odd but I actually have like a 12 in old color tv and leave it on for my dog to watch when I leave. seriously. he rather enjoys it. that or you can let them run around as they please instead of crating them the whole time. or, if you can, leave him at a doggie day care or something.
