Your best quality of video, if you're going to edit on the pc, is MiniDV.
HDD and DVD/miniDVD are lower quality.
Sony, Canon, and Panasonic make great units. Samsung and JVC make acceptable units at lower cost generally. But the quality isn't as good.

Goto http://www.camcorderinfo.com/
They've got a list of best buys. Choose according to price and preference and then search a price comparison website for the cheapest place to get it. In general the panasonics and canons are the ones to buy right now, if you don't want a HD (high definition) or a HDD (hard disk) storage one. miniDV tape is still the way to go for cheap and high quality and compact. DVD camcorders are too big, HDD ones are still not very good quality and HD ones are too big and expensive.

go to www.camcorderinfo.com, and search for panasonic's pv-gs series. a gs-300 might be in your price range. also go to froogle to search for cheaper prices on cams. try froogle first, as that might allow you to get a handycam, although i still recommend a gs-300 or 500 (your lucky if you can find 400s now).
