I don't smoke, and I'm a cheat date alcohol-wise.
Not a male, but you could consider dressing up your place (if she trusts you) or doing a picnic, and putting together your own romantic date. Expensive isn't always better. Not to mention, times are hard, and gas prices are high.
(My husband and I enjoy playing an MMO game together. It's fun, it's interesting, it's dramatic, it's time together almost every evening side by side, with some food thrown in, comfy chairs, a television program on... and it's only 15 bucks each a month! Try beating that with a movie date. :P)

What so unless she sleeps with you, her company isn't worth the money? Wow you're messed up. Its about spending time together. Not "what you get out of it in the end". If you don't enjoy her company and just want to bone, than you don't really like her. So why does a man have to spend "more" and get "less"? Not all men do.. just you. I'd happily take out my guy or split the date because I enjoy his company and he enjoys mine. He happens to make alot more than me so he pays usually. He's also a gentleman and believes a guy should normally pay for the date. You don't HAVE to take her out to a nice dinner, you can stay in too...

Men...we are the hunters, and you gotta be willing to go the distance for love, not just a piece of pie(if you know what i mean)...
Take her to a romantic picnic with a bottle of wine, and small stuff(maybe dinner for two for like $15-20, and much more romantic(and that's what they want!) Once you find your babe, your searching is over(but don't forget to keep up the romance...) Find quirky stuff to do that's fun as well as not too stiff on the wallet, not just typical wine/dine stuff.

If you want to be cheap then take her out after she has got her dinner! make sure she knows you have money but are not willing to spend it on her, that way either she ditchess you and looks for a losser that will or if you played your cards rite and said all the right things she will try to work harder for you to like her more and spend more on her! hope you get laid! their is more to it than just that but hey thats a start
