The traffic controllers are understaffed because Unions put constrains on FAA's ability to hire enough traffic controls. If there were enough of those so a person with two hour's sleep would not have to come to work, this would not have happened.

I understand your logic, and I agree to a great extent. The problem isn't entirely with the unions, though; part of it is poor time management of existing personnel by the tower facilities themselves. But the two things in concert led to a needless tragedy.

I do agree that the unions have seriously hampered efficiency and potentially are creating serious safety concerns. I personally think, and have thought for some time, that the union system is outdated and causes way more problems than it solves, not only in this industry but others as well ( I live in a town that has a major employer with mostly UAW employees- oh, joy).

Hopefully this incident will be all the "learning curve" these guys need to take steps to prevent this from happening again.

Safety sensitive jobs in commercial aviation, including the ATC's have duty time limitations. If someone comes into work with only a couple hours sleep, that's their own fault.

Any plane crash is never caused by one single event, but always by a chain of related events that add up to eventual failure of the system. I believe they will find that there were a lot of people not doing everything they should have been in this case as well.
