I would assume that if god existed that he/she would believe himself/herself to be a god, and therefore not be atheist. No one ever said the god you believe in can't be yourself.

Do you believe that you exist? Unless you adhere to an unusual variation of existential phenomenology, you likely accept your own existence. In short, you believe in yourself.
Therefore, why would you expect God to disbelieve in God's self?
If your objection, however, is not that God doubts his own existence, but rather, God is not himself devoted to a deity, Christianity answers this objection handily with the trinity. Each member of the trinity adores each of the others, and that adoration is akin to (but transcends) our own adoration. So even this objection fails.

Technically, there is no higher power for God to believe in. I guess God would be a Buddhist.

No, I don't agree. Within the Godhead there is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and they very much believe in each other.
