Hello!! :o) A cousin of mine suffers from 'fur allergies' and has no problems with her poodle. Apparently they don't shed. [At least that's what my cousin says] Craig!! :o)

Just so you know....you are not allergic to the fur! People are allergic to the dander on pets, and no matter what type of fur or hair, or lack therof, will take away dander. This is a common misconception, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic animal. However, there are products to wash your pets that remove much of the dander. Keep the animal out of your room, this is the most important thing. DO NOT let them anywhere near your sleeping area. I would suggest a breed that sheds less hair, since dander sticks to hair, and hair sticks to everything!!!! I know this is going out on a limb, but if you could ever afford it, hardwood floors and leather furniture are best for allergy suffering animal lovers because it wipes clean with a wet cloth, which captures a lot of the dander before it becomes airborne. I wouldn't suggest siamese, persians, or other oriental breeds because they honestly have more dander than other cats. Keep the pet clean, washed with the special soap, and keep your house clean. Take an allergy medication. I suggest zyrtec, astelin, and nasonex.

Depending on your level of allergic sensitivity, you might be able to have a short-haired cat or dog. Often, people's allergies are triggered by the hair that is shed from animals. Having a short-haired pet can reduce the amount of hair that gets shed and therefore reduce your allergic reaction. Another alternative is hairless cats or dogs (remember Mr. Bigglesworth in the Austin Powers movies?). They take a bit of getting used to because it's an unusual look for cats and dogs, but it's often the perfect answer for someone with allergies!

As a person who is allergic to cats, I have experience with this problem. You are allergic to a substance in the cat's saliva, which it slathers on its coat as it bathes.
Cats, like people fall into two categories: secreter and non-secreter.
You need to evaluate any cat you get before you take it home (animal shelters are the best, due to the varieties of breeds) If you sneeze or your eyes itch, the cat is a secreter, and it's not for you. If you look long enough, you'll find the right cat. I own three non-secreter--a tortie, a grey tabby and a blue-point Siamese

There are some breeds less likely to cause an allergic reaction than others. Here is a place to get some info on dogs - some are even realitively hairless (like the Chinese Crested): http://members.aol.com/AHTerrier/lowdanderdogs-books.html As far as cats, check out the Sphinx at www.cfainc.org Good luck!

The Devon Rex cat is know as the hypo allergenic cat! You should suffer less with this type of cat but no promise that you will not suffer at all. I have allergies and I have two cats. I just take claritin and vacume a bunch. It's fine. They are worth it.

Get a furless cat, altho they are expensive and a waiting list of other allergic people. Better yet, buy a fish.

Just take some allergy shots or pills and GET OVER IT! Pets are an important part of a person's life, and to ignore them because of a little sneezing is just dumb!
