Think about relaxing all of your body, start with your toes and then think of every muscle you have from your feet and below. Sounds like a cliché trick but really does it. I hardly get above the knees. My friend does the breathing trick - listen meditatively to your breathing and nothing else.

Go through the same going-to bed routine that you did when you originally went to sleep.
So, for example if you had a hot drink or read a book for a while then do the same again. Attempting to go back to sleep immediately after waking up is unlikely to work because you are "trying too hard". Just relax and go through the normal routine - it may take a little longer but you will get back to sleep rather than lying awake all night.
Sweet dreams!

I struggle w/ the same sleep disorder, talk to your dr there are things out there that can help. I use amerisciences supplement called sleep...it helps you fall asleep quicker after awakening and you wake up feeling rested and not groggy from a drug. the website is amerisciences.com. I've been on it for about 6 months and I like it. good luck

Oh Gosh .. it's horrible isn't it?
Live is going all wonky, pressing needs of those around you, unresolved conflicts ... you get just enough sleep and, boom, you're wide awake and needlessly pestering over a problem you can do nothing about in the middle of the night.
I know this answer will get deleted but -- get your mind on something else.
Take one shot of Jack Daniels and go masturbate.

I have that problem too. Sometimes I just get up and start doing things. By the next night I am able to sleep!

If you try to stay awake it seems that you fall asleep, so try using that. lay there and think of something as you stare at the ceiling for awhile.
