I'm not sure if you want to build your own sensor or to locate a sensor to use. The link below is just one major brand of sensor manufacturers. Personally for the money, I'd start with a good quality sensor rather than build one from scratch. With the time and money you'd invest you're likely to have been able to bought a small inventory of off-the-shelf components instead.

Also, shop around, using the Internet to find sources. There are many brands, sizes, styles, features and so forth.

You can buy touch, sound, and photo sensors in hundreds of varieties, from about 60 different vendors so why would you want to make one?
If you want to figure out how to use a particular type of sensor, go to the vendor and simply ask for the spec sheet on line, and voila! you will have more than enough information.

Do you want to make these sensors or use them. For a light sensor, use either a photo-voltaic cell (aka solar battery) or a photo-resistor. A sound sensor is another way of saying a microphone.
