This was addressed in American Rifleman some months ago in their issue on York. He used a 1903 Springfield. This is backed up by York's son Andrew in the article. While on arrival in France the 82nd Divison was issued 1917's. York however prefered the sights on the '03 and traded for one. Also he carrred a 1911 .45acp not a Luger as in the film. The Luger was used because .45's don't work well with blanks. Mr York served as a tecnical advisor on the film....

he also used the P08 Luger too (you know, pickup anything when you have to) but to be honest i dont know for sure as to what rifle he used but most infantry at the time did not like the 1917 as it was more of a hassle to operate than the 1903 (i think that is the reason i heard from the oletimers around here) sorry i couldnt be of more help

M1917 Enfield + M1911 Colt 45 - Sargeant Alvin York's rifle is located at Middle Tennessee State University -MTSU- Phone #615-898-2375 - Professor Tom Nolan(Alvin York Project 2006)
In the movie "Sargeant York", Gary Cooper uses a German Luger to shoot 6 German soldiers who charge him...In real life, Alvin York used his own M1911 Colt..The Luger was used in the movie because it would function with blanks..
I have no doubt that Alvin York also used the M1903 Springfield rifle at some point, soldiers often change weapons, always have and probable always will...What I thought you wanted to know was, what rifle was he carrying the day(Oct 8th 1918) he won the CMOH...The rifle he used that day was a M1917 Enfield, that rifle is at MTSU you can call and talk to them if you like(Professor Tom Nolan)...They went back to the battle location to find brass from York's rifle and pistol...They did find brass, believed to be from Alvin York's rifle...They didn't find the brass from the M1911 45 and plan to go back and search again..

Everything i've ever heard or read (including commentary by a relative) indicates a 1903 springfield.

Bound's hubby here:
According to interviews reported in the American Rifleman, York used an M1903 Springfield stateside but when he was deployed in France he was issued an M1917 Enfield. This is supposed to be related by his son.
