I am for breeding. I am against people who breed for the heck of it. I am NOT about quantity as most seem to be these days. I am about quality. I have had 3 breedings in the last 8 years. I am a very picky breeder. I don't just pick any old dog and call it good. I am also not in it for the money. I see and hear of so many people that are proud of how much they made out of their litter and want to have more just for the money. That disgusts me. If I was in it for the money I sure as heck would have had a lot more litters than three. If you are looking for a fun pet I say go to the pound where there are plenty of unwanted pets in need of being wanted and having a home. I am all for people who have pets to get the fixed. The advantage of this is also to help prevent and cancers or certain diseases that they might have recieved if they were not fixed.

I work at a shelter and I breed. I love a specific breed, end of story. I cannot say that I "love" breeding. It is hard, expensive, time consuming, and sad. However, breeding your own Champion that has all it's health clearances and working titles is great. Not having to try and find a place to buy a puppy from is great too!!!!! Breeding will continue beacuse people love dogs and like certain qualities about certain breeds. If more people though through the dog purchase first, there would be less dogs in shelters. If there were mandatory health clearances before breeding, there would be less shelter dogs.
If an end could be put to backyard breeding and puppy mills, there would be less shelter dogs. Don't blane breeders, blame backyard breeders and people who breed for profit.
The shelter stuff is not mine either. It is 9pm, and I know where each and every dog I have produced is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like everything else, there is a place and a circumstance for it. I grew up in a show dog family. There were strict guidlines and purposes for breeding, they had to meet standard, genetics, and histories free from defect. Even though my family bred dogs, my parents were active in the rescue community(my parents were founding members of a local rescue group for all dogs/cats). Also if a dog wasnt a prime example of the breed they were spayed/neutered and lived their life as a pet. People who breed according to reponsible and ethical breeding choices can actually save a breed from extinction. Take for example the Irish Red and White Setter. This breed was almost non existent save for one breeder who loved these dogs and wanted them to stay a part of history. I am a heavy encourager of altering your pets. Not everyone has the know how when it comes to breeding. Many feel that just because a dog is purebred they should have the chance to have babies. What most people fail to do though is, do the research understand the reasons behind ethical breeding, and abide by them. They see a profit in a puppy, what they do not see is the time and effort put in and that the profit margin in minimal if you breed correctly. Vet visits shortly after birth, vaccinations, altering for pet quality puppies, ect. I have issues with any animal that is exploited without consideration for the animal such as racing dogs(shot/starved when no longer winning) racing horses (electricuted or bones broken for the insurance money) puppy mills for the lack of vet care, horrible living conditions, and the endless pregnancy of the females(ones who can no longer produce are also shot/starved)...the list just keeps on going. I even buy CERTIFIED HUMANE meats (http://www.certifiedhumane.com/). I feel that if they will give their life to sustain me, the least I can do is ensure that their life was pleasant and stress free right to the end. I am for spaying and neutering your pet ....leave the breeding to people who will do it the right way..if you want info on responsible breeding check out: http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/index.cfm. I believe that if you want a purebred dog and not interested in showing, your first stop should be www.petfinder.com. This website has access to all shelter animals across the country, MANY ARE UNWANTED PUREBREDS! I know that our local humane society has a program called 'match-a-pet'. It is a program for people who want a purebred and are willing to wait just a little bit to find one...SOOOO YOU WANT A PUPPY... many purebred puppies can also be found in shelters. When puppy mills are shut down those puppies are sent into the shelter systems.

Well, I am a breed enthusiast and I happen to love Great Danes.
I feel breeding isn't a hobby or something to take lightly, but without it, "breeds" would disappear.
Unfortunately, current laws restricting breeding are not helping and making the "commercial or hobby" breeding illegal wouldn't help the main cause of over population and that's BYB's and irresponsible pet owners that don't spay and neuter.
Restricting breeding, etc requiring training and state inspections would be a great help.
I hate breeding for profit, or breeding "by accident".
There are plenty of "pets" requiring homes in shelters and ect and I always encourage people to go there first.
I believe breeding has a place and I am not completely against it, but I feel more laws and regulations should be in place to protect the animals.
Also...
I think that ALL breeders should have a limit of litters ( a year )they are allowed to produce, ect. Things like this would be very, very helpful.
But then again it's not the law abiding good hearted people that are causing the problems.
Unregulated BYB's and people who are too lazy or selfish ( to alter their pet ) are the biggest part of the problem...
It's actually really sick and I suppose I am mostly against it because I do not believe animals should be reproduced for profit and I think most people do not possess the know-how to be truly GOOD breeders.
So, to wrap it up... I am mostly AGAINST.
AND ALL PETS SHOULD/MUST BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED!!!!!
Want a pet, even a pure bred?
Start with a website like... petfinder.com
They work with shelters to locate homes for ALL kinds of animals. AND you can narrow your search by breed, or mix of that breed and even age.
It's where I started looking for a friend.
PS. Do not mix up "puppyfind" which is a garbage "puppymill" for profit site with petfinder.com, NOT THE SAME THING!
Thanks!

so are you against breeding in the sense that you want it outlawed? Because thats just dumb. Iagree there are too many backyard breeders and puppymills, but that is the laws fault for not enforcing the laws we already have in place. Why should good breeders, who benefit their respective breeds have to suffer? and in all likelihood, would be the only ones who did suffer since puppymills and BYB's are shady anyway. Kind of the same logic as "If you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have them..." You need to do the research before you start on a tyrade about breeding is bad. Do not listen to PETA or other humaniac groups, it is all hypocritical BS. Put your effort into getting harsher penalties for those who are caught operating backyard breeding programs and puppymills and call yourt Senator to let them know you would like more attention from local police to enforce those laws.

I'm for breeding just as long as they know what they are doing. Such as they watch the health in all of there breeding dogs to make sure they are not going to give some one a heart ach.
I do breed dogs myself I tell any one who gets a dog from me we want to here are there new puppy is doing and we love pics. And if there is ever a problem we want to know about it. Also if there comes a time that they can no longer keep the dog we tell them they would always have a home here again.

All household pets and service/working dogs should be neutered. Dog breeders should only allow litters when the are buyers for the whole litter waiting already. There are far too many dogs without homes and being put down. Same as for cats. License breeders and have fees so any schmuck with 2 dogs does not breed puppies just so their kids can "see the miracle of birth".

I have spent time at shelters, and I am a breeder. It is not MY dogs filling up the shelters, nor is it the dogs of any of the many breeders I know.
The problem is the people who are either to stupid or to lazy to manage their animals. They are the ones whose crossbreed puppies (and adults) tend to end up in the shelter. And I would not, by any stretch, call them a breeder, I would call them irresponsible. Put the blame where the blame should be.

Overall, I'm against it. However, I have met some very responsible breeders who care for their dogs and pups as if they were their own children...and adopt the pups more than sell them (actually do an application and background check on prospective buyers). I always recommend looking at adopting before buying...the pet overpopulation in this country is out of control, and irresponsible breeders only make it worse! There are times that adopting isn't the right choice...then I would recommend buying from a responsible breeder.

There are too many backyard breeders and that needs to stop. People think just because their animals have 'papers' its a free pass to breeding. There are countless things that go into becoming a good breeder (http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/Articles/breeder.cfm)
and few people are really up to the challenge.
There are so many homeless pets in the world, and so many die each year because there are not enough home. If you have an animal as a pet, dear god, please spay or neuter them.
