It seems neither schools nor parents correct poor grammar or spelling - don't people care any more?

It's not the shorthand that originated in text messages and used on chat sites that I object to (though I can't say I'm a great fan). To the people trying to educate me on the meaning of LOL and nvm, I was chatting online before you knew how to switch the pc on.

What irritates me more is the incorrect use of "their/there" or "too/to" or the inability of some people to string a coherent sentence together. Worse is phonetic spelling by people too ignorant to know the difference and too lazy to look it up.

Yesterday I read a post that said "I brang my hamster to school" - if the child is old enough to be on chat sites (no doubt unsupervised) surely the parents should have corrected such terrible grammar? Perhaps they should have encouraged more attention in class and less time spent on extra curricular activities!

To the rest of you who left typos or spelling errors in this post - didn't you think to double check?

I agree, as I have always believed that proper spelling and grammar are imperative to success.

It has in fact become a pet peeve of mine. I often correct the grammar in my child's school newsletter and send it back to the school.

The computer generation has been duped into believing that "spell check" and "grammar check" will correct errors and bring their documents to an acceptable grammar level.

The claim that bad grammar and spelling are acceptable in "informal" communications such as IM and chat rooms is debatable. I believe that is more of a result of laziness and will continue to degrade the use of the English language.

Its the Intranet age and grammer goes out the window. PPL's use Intranet lingo with phrases such as LOL, LMAO, BRB, etc and the shortned words like U R hot, Y R U here, etc. Thier also pretty young. Doesn't it drive you nuts when PPL's use the wrong spelling of the word and don't even NO? Y cant they get it write? N E ways, that's my too scents. ROTFLMAO. J/K.

I myself have excellent grammEr.

PS.

I love how flip4urkandi says:

"i have great grammer and know how to spell, but just because i don't do it all the time doesn't mean i don't know how. "

It's GRAMMAR not GRAMMER.

I hope you know I'm only joking.

I totally agree with you. It seems the youth don't care how they write. The funny thing is, the abbreviations they use, are not even the correct ones. Wait until they start life in the real world. They will be wishing they had paid more attention in School. I certainly would never hire someone who does not know how to spell properly!

Forget that, the real question is, how can they simply ignore the "Check Spelling" button RIGHT THERE!?

I suspect they've been so insidiously warped by the "crime and punishment" philosophy of schools, parents and religion that they have no sense of self-motivation just to do the right thing, for the sake of pride in one's accomplishments.

In fact they feel that effort toward accomplishment is a waste of time as it is impossible to achieve. It's truly sickening. People today are graduating school without any interest in books or learning, and have barely even read a book; just gotten by. We should demand more from ourselves and from our children.

A lot of the posters here are either very young or from foreign countries and English is not their first language, but I agree with you. It is kind of sad. I criticized a fellow once for his spelling, then found out he had cerebral palsy so typing was extremely difficult for him. I no longer criticize anyone for their spelling.

Sometimes people don't even know they are misspelling words. A lot of times I'm not even sure how to spell things. Sometimes people don't take their time and others are just lazy and don't care to learn.

I tutored English all through college. You would be amazed at how many people IN COLLEGE can't even put together a coherent sentence. Sad, really.
