When I got my first cat, I was obsessed with trying to find out her breed too - I then came to realize that: 1) She was just a regular domestic house cat, and 2) It didn't really matter anyway, since it didn't make me love her any less. The best way to find out the breed of cat you have is to start with where you got the kitten/cat from. If you purchased the cat from a breeder or a pet store, they should have told you what kind of kitten/cat you were buying. If you've adopted your kitten/cat from a pet shelter or have obtained it in some other way(found it, friends cat had a litter, etc, etc.), chances are that it's a domestic house cat with no specific breed or pedigree. If this is the case, you should consider yourself lucky, as most "run-of-the-mill" house cats, have the best attributes of all "pure-bred" cats combined! If you really need to label your cat something, use it's coat length and coloring! For example, I have a "Domestic Medium Haired Blue and Cream Calico" and a "Domestic Medium Haired Polydactyl Black and Silver Classic Tabby with White". Almost sounds like a breed of their own doesn't it?

Here is a site that might help. Once you get to this site, via the link below, click on the breed slide show. A seperate window will pop up and show you pictures of different breeds of cats.

The kitty in the pic is a run of the mill DSH (domestic shorthair), Grey Tabby/White. Now mind you, the "run of the mill" DSH cats are the absolute best there is! Luckily they are the most common.
If you are looking for information on another cat, try this google search page for several resources:

You can buy a book on cat breeds. It will list characteristics and types. It's possible that you might not be able to figure it out though if your cat is a mutt.

If it's the cat in the picture it's a domestic shorthair with tabby coloring.
