Are you sure he didn't say,"Quitting is for quitters."? And if he did, what he probably meant was if you quit too easily, you get in the habit of quitting and that makes you a quitter. Someone who gives up long before they should. Perseverance creates winners.

Depending on your dads age this can be a referance to age, or quilting parties. A pastime of my grandmothers generation, but one that I got to enjoy. Some men called these gatherings, gossip parties. My dad called it the liers' club/cofee clutch. My god-father called them the live soap opras.
Young and old women alike used to get together to make quilts because many hands put the pieces together faster. What would take one woman two years of work alone. Took only two or three days in a group. And you had the shaired enjoyment of the company of other like minded women.
Of course there was always the topic of men that was well discussed. ( A fact that most men didn't care far.)
But should a man go looking for something warm to wrap up in when they are cold or they don't feel good. They will take that old quilt every time.
Soooooo - quilting is for anyone who wants to make a memory out of all those designer jeans you can't wear, and can't bear to throw away.
Quilting is for all those apecial teashirts. Get them out of the closet and into a medium that will stay with you the rest of your life, telling stories from now on.
Take pictrues, transfer them onto fabric for a one of a kind wedding quilt.
Quilting can be as easy or complex as you choose. Sew by hand. Use a hand sewing machine.
Use your computer to make designe your own quilts. Make quilting friends all over the world who have their own unique insights on quiltting.
YESS! It is Intronational with unique styles from every countries. Quilting dates back to 3500 BC.
So Just smile when your dad makes that remarke. Fool Him. - Git a trunk and keep everything in there. That way he can't complain about the mess.

Well I believe what your father meant is , do not just be a quitter just try hard until you find something which will makes you happy. Quiting it won't help you , and you won't find your passion because you will just Wait all the time. you are not a quilter , just try to stick to other things once at a time.

I think your dad meant, "Quilting is for people who quilt as a hobby."
He probably used quilters as an adjective for people who quilt.

it means that only people who specialize in a task should do it so quilters should make quilts.

Emily has it right.
Your dad is being pretty funny.
He is inferring that quilters are a certain type of people and in his mind are ... lacking certain qualities.

He may have meant:
"Quitting is for quitters."
He also may have meant:
"Don't be girly. Be a man."
(Quilting is a stereotypically feminine craft.)
p.s. You're screwing with us, aren't you?

It sounds like he's heard of Yogi Berra.
"It's deja vu all over again."
"You can observe a lot by watching."
On why NY lost the 1960 series to Pittsburgh, "We made too many wrong mistakes."
"The future ain't what it used to be."
"It ain't over 'til it's over."
