Depends on the mower and the power, my son is 15 and just this summer cutting the lawn, we have a big mower and at times I couldn't handle it.

Preteen, but they should be monitored the first few times they do it. It's tempting to stick your hand in and clean out the grass.

Old enough to understand basic safety rules like don't put your hand underneath the mower to clean out the grass when it is running, don't run over the sprinkler or the dog, things like that.

Depends on the kid. Some mature much more rapidly (or more slowly) than others. For safety's sake, if yours are among the latter hold off until they are ready for sure. Hands and feet don't grow back.

Depending on how mature he/she is I would say twelve. That is when my dad had me mowing using a push mower and then when I was 15 he showed me how to use the riding mower.
