To punish people. According to Christian mythology, this God guy may not WANT people to go to Hell, but hey, you gotta set up a jail for the bad folks regardless of whether they wanna be there. Supposedly we CHOOSE to go to Heaven or Hell. Our free will sends us one place or the other.

You ask a really good philosophical question. God is good and God is great, but I truly think he likes to play head games with us.
One of the ways he does this (to answer your question) is he give us all the possibilities to be successful in life and with that he also gives us free will. I think he says, "Here. I have the prize waiting for you but you must chose to be a good person." When we elect not to do what is good and right and not accept Him, then he has another place reserved for us.
Hope this answers your question.

You're right to say that He didn't/doesn't want anyone to go to Hell and that He created it, but it is more important to remember that He also gave us free will to choose our own destination in the afterlife, since mindlessly obeying Him wouldn't be better than Hell if you think about it.

God gives us the choice whether we would like to go Hell or not.Yes He does not want us to go but if you choose to then you just choose to.It's your choice. Some people chose to go to hell but others do not.Hell was created for the purpose of the devil. As it says in the Bible he was kicked out of Heaven for trying to take control,or for trying to be GOD.Read your Bible.

That is a comlpex question. We first have to establish that God loves us infinitely. Because He loves us, He gave us free will so that we could do whatever we wanted. He gave us a share in His nature. Now because He gave us free will He give us a choice; you can either love God and choose Him or love yourself and only yourself. You can't have both. So for the people that cose to love Him, He let them enter Heaven. And for the people that chose to love themselves, He gave them there own place, where they can love themselves for all eternity.

It's Free Will. God doesn't want anyone to go to Hell, but it has to be our choice to do either right or wrong.

We couldn't have joy unless we could have pain. God allowed us the opportunity to choose between freedom through Christ, or captivity through the devil. We are free to choose, that is true, but we are NOT free to choose the consequence or our choices. We can think freedom means the ability to choose wrong things, but it doesn't work that way. Real freedom comes from not submitting yourself to bondage. Addiction, for example, is bondage. We are free to make choices, but addiction takes away that freedom and leads to captivity and death.
God isn't going to force you to do anything. It might take away pain, but it takes away all possibility of joy, too. Joy comes from using our free agency to make good choices that give us freedom and eternal life. That's why God calls them commandments. He wants us back with Him so badly he commanded us to get back to Him, yet He can't force us. That takes away the chance to have joy.

It's all about free will.
But that fact that we are not all doomed to hell tells us that He is a God of compassion.
He has a contingency plan: Salvation.
But to choose it we must exercise our free will.

without free will, would there really be that true love that God is looking for? that true relationship? just think if your girlfriend had to be with you...she had no choice in the matter...she would not be happy with it all, you would probably be miserable as well...so free is essentail to a real relationship. so with free will comes consiquences...which really seems to be the thrust of all your questions, avoidence of consiquences...

He made hell for the devil and his minions. God wants us to come to Him willingly...not force Himself or His kingdom on anyone.
