Someone on here suggested that was so, in military terms.
Just a few.
Richard Todd: British 6th Airborne, landed to relieve troops at Pegasus bridge. D-Day
James Stewart: Colonel Army Air Corp WWII. Price on his head!
Lee Marvin: Wounded whilst serving with !st U.S Infantry Division.
Anyone think of any more?

A lot of actors served with distinction in the military. Here is a site with a list from WWII

My favorite is Mel Brooks:

"Mel Brooks (Melvin Kaminsky) joined army in WWII and became a combat engineer. Cleared German mines after the Battle of the Bulge. He organized shows for the US troops, and when the German army began transmitting propaganda over loudspeakers Brooks is said to have replied with a version of Al Jolson's 'Toot-toot-tootsie'."

I think pretentious and ducky is more apt...

heaven save us all from the play within play... all about the hardships of an actors world... I can't stand them... and if radio four doesn't start to realise that we don't all live an actors life... and don't give a damn either... and buck up and produce something gritty about real people and not the actors' fantasy world, it is in serious danger of losing this listener of 60 years.
