Exercise, a dose of nyquil, warm milk, or reading a boring book before bed all would help you fall asleep faster.

I had the same problem... until my doctor prescribed Sonata. It really worked for me. The pill makes you go to sleep, but doesn't keep you asleep, so it's perfect for what you're describing. The effect of the pill wears out like after 3-4 hours. You should be able to fall asleep witin 20 minutes, half hour of taking it.
What else I tried, after taking Sonata [I'm not too keen on taking pills] I did something that required a lot of attention and my sight. Like crosswords, play a game on your phone, read a magazine [not a book, it might get too interesting and it can keep you up all night].
Good luck!

Avoid caffeine or a heavy dinner. Also, maybe you can choose a workout that burns your energy (not pumps it up) like swimming for example....or also you can try yoga, there are special yoga posses and videos specifically for when you WANT your body to rest.
There are also some CD's with relaxation techniques an soothing music that you pop in while you go to bed (I never make it through the whole CD when I'm already Zzz).
They say lavender scents has relaxing effects, maybe you could try a spray in your bedroom, or use a scented lotion.
Take a hot bath or shower before going to bed, it'll relax you...you can also drink some hot linden or basswood tea, which also has some relaxing properties (no sugar).
Finally, there are always a variety of OTC pills that are non-habit forming, try them and get some rest...

I avoid big meals before bed and I perform high intensity workouts on a regular basis and I still had the same problem getting to sleep. There are three things that worked for me, meditation, turning off the television, and dimming the lights at least an hour before bedtime. I try to meditate for at least 15 mins day. It helps me to clear out all the mental crap that spins in my head when I'm trying to get to sleep and I read that dimming the lights and shutting off the television at least an hour before bedtime helps to prepare your mind and body for sleep. I try to do this at least 4-5 times a week and I quickly found I was getting to sleep easier than before. Now it's a head hits the pillow and I'm gone thing! :-) Good Luck!

I used to have the same problem, part of what I do is physical and part is mental. First turn off all lights(tv,computer, lamps) so you don't have any distractions. If you have a partner that stays up late buy an eye mask to shut out the distractions and ear plugs if necessary.
Second, make sure not to eat anything to have or have any caffeine which makes it harder to get to sleep and no heavy exercise before bed.
Third, if what is keeping you up is daily worries and responsibilities, you have to tell yourself they are out of your control and there is nothing you can do right to now to fix them. This is the hardest step since it requires the most work.

I've read in articles about sleeping problems. They claim the best way to fall asleep is to try to stay awake. Also, if something is bothering you, smile. They claim you can't think bad thougts while you're smiling. One last thought is to clear your mind and put yourself in your favorite relaxing spot...on the beach, waves rippling in, light breeze blowing, cool drink at your side, etc.

first of all that's fairly normal not to fall right to sleep...lay off the caffeine and read in bed before falling asleep and try not to worry much about it... your body knows when to knock you out.

Avoid eating large meals before bed. Don't drink excessive liquids 2 hours before you go to bed. Try reading 1/2 before you want to go to sleep. Magnesium is also known to help you sleep.

Take a Benydryl. It helps me relax and fall asleep faster, and it doesn't make me groggy in the morning.
