For people who put money on the counter, give them the change on the counter too. For those who put it in your hand, put the change in their hand too. Good behavior should be rewarded with the same vice versa for bad behavior/rudeness. Mirror their behavior.

People expect the change in their hand so they don't have to go through the trouble of picking the (thin) coins up off of the counter. And whenever I get change (I'm American), they hand me the bills, then pour the change on top of the bills (still in my hand).

well not all people do it just sometimes the cashier is busy looking at the register or scanning your items or something so you might as well put the money on the counter. when they hand it back to you in your hand its called being courteous...after all you are in their store paying for their items so its the least a cashier can do dont you think?

This is my pet peeve. I always hand my money to the person I'm giving it to, otherwise, I think it's disrespectful; as if I'm saying they're not good enough for me to graze fingers with. I hate when I hand people money and they don't hand it back to me, because I feel like they have been rude not to extend me the same courtesy.

Actually, most people haven't really thought about it. Most people think it's okay and doesn't really affect anyone. I work on retail and what kills me the most is when I have to wait forever when the customer pays with change.

Could be a disease fear. I hand my money over hand to hand unless asked to leave it on the counter.
I really don't know why.
