Cats cannot sense when they are going to fall because the simple fact is that a cat will injure itself less if it falls from a second or third floor than a first.
Once a cat can feel the acceleration of a fall it takes a posture of shrugging with it's paws stretched and it lets this posture go once it hits the floor deadening the effect of the impact. If the fall is started from a lower level the cat does not have time to postion his body correctly.
