There is no meaningful average. Every aircraft is different. A cessna 150 uses a hell of a lot less than a 747, though the 747 is probably more efficient when the fuel cost per seat mile is considered.

The 737 and the smaller airbuses burn around 5 to 6 thousand pounds/ hour. If you want to do the math, the weight of fuel is around 6.8 pounds/gallon. It depend a lot on the speed of the aircraft, the altitude, the weight of the a/c, and several other factors but 6000lbs/hour will get you in the ball park. The 727 was around 10000/hour. Now you know why it cost so much to fly. :)

A lot... The 747-400 burns around 1 gallon of fuel per second, so thats 3600 gallons per hour, and for a typical flight from say Hong Kong - Vancouver (around 12 hours) it roughly calculates to about 43200 gallons... That's a lot of fuel, roughly 135.9 tons.
But of course the amount of fuel depends on the aircraft and its engines etc.

All internal combustion engines, whether aircraft, car, boat or whatever, burn around 1/2 lb of fuel, per horsepower, per hour. Engineers call this "specific fuel consumption".
Jet engines operating at their most efficient altitude and speed, burn a little less, but burn substantially more at low altitudes and high speed.
For a more specific answer, you have to define what you mean by an "average airplane".

Here's one for you, an F-104 Starfighter burns 100lbs (almost 15 gallons) of fuel a mile.

A cessna 172 uses about 8 gallons of avgas per hour, on average. by the way the wing tanks hold 21.5 gallons each. (there are two wing tanks. one tank for each wing.) for a total fuel load of 43 gallons. of this only 40 gallons is usable.

My Cessna draws 7.5 gallons per hour. A 747 probably draws that much every ten seconds. Of course, it weighs 300 times as much.

impossible to answer without specifics, try the inernet and the names of the different aircraft you are interested in most will give a fair idea of fuel consumption
