I've done both. I agree with k G that basements can be depressing. If you do opt for the basement, put a lot of color around you to counter any depressed feelings.
Plus I found myself spending a lot of time alone. Upstairs that didn't seem to happen as much.

The biggest room upstairs. It keeps you around everyone and you have a lot of space. I've found that living in the basement (especially in the winter) can get really depressing. Plus there's always spiders.

Move to the biggest room upstairs...should be nicer.

if you have central air ..go up if not i would go down as i would rather be a little chilly than too hot, another thing the concrete walls of the basement are better sound insulators so it is quieter down there
