It could be. From what I've read, it's a good idea to keep at least one litter box on every floor of your home.

Also check to make sure there's nothing in their poop. If they have worms or a UTI, elimination can be painful, causing them to avoid the litter box. Although this wouldn't explain why they're ONLY doing so upstairs. So the safest bet is that if you put a litter box on your second floor, it would remedy the problem. If not, a chat with the vet would be in order.

Good luck!

Did you get the cats as kitten or adults? Have they been to the vet lately and are healthy? Is the litter box cleaned often? I agree with having a litter box on each floor that they have easy access to. Have you used the same kind of litter? I have the electric litter box which is great but the "pushers" often get clumps on it - depends on what litter you use.

Young cats seem to wait 'until the last minute' to run to the litter box. I'd also put one upstairs. Better to stop it now, before the house smells bad.

You can also make sure that the litter box is cleaned daily because just like us cats do not want to go to a dirty bathroom.

You might want to take them to a vet. If they are males this type of behaviour can be caused by urinary tract infection. And I also agree that placing a littler box where its convenient is a good idea. Just what you need, another litter box!

Do they keep going in the same spot upstairs? It may be that they can smell where they went last time, and so they keep going in the same spot. You can go to your local pet store and pick up a stray that will neutralize the smell. The other option is to move their cat box to where they keep going upstairs.

It's best to have a litter pan each level of your house. Some cats don't like to share a litter pan and do better if they each can choose My vet recommends one for each cat and one extra. More work for you but happier pets.

I am always amazed when people say the litterbox is in the basement. To me that's like asking them to use an outhouse! Anyway it works for some and I think you are asking for problems by not making a box available for them upstairs and down.
