Stores have recovery discs (Norton etc.) are these any help and will I be able to get back to the picture files if I use a recovery disc?
Thanks so much for any help!

Using your recovery disks will possibly destroy your files on the computer. (some dont) but check to see if there is text at the bottom on your screen that says "del for setup" or f2 for bios setup or something like that... If you don't see it you may have to check your computers manual. This will open the computers bios screen, In the bios screen see if there is a place on one of the menus to "IDE drive detection". Here's a link to an example http://www.lynxstudio.com/awardbiossetup.html

Your computers bios information may have gotten messed up and just needs to be checked. If your bios detects a hard drive save the settings and exit. It should boot up to windows now.

Try booting into safe mode first, (press the f8 key as it boots and pick safe mode from the menu), this can sometimes boot up a failing computer and you will be able to access your pictures. Otherwise try the recovery disks and just make sure to not format or create a new partition. if you stay away from those two actions you definitely won't harm anything and there is a good chance you'll be able to access your pictures.
