You should have 2 litter boxes temporarily to make sure that neither doesn't use the litter box at all. After a while if they both continually use the same one take one away.

I have 3 cats and only one litter box, I used to have 2 litter boxes but they always used only one, the other one was always untouched, so i just got rid of it and used 1. I clean the box every day, well now that I am pregnant my husband cleans it, but if you do it every day and clean the whole box at least twice a month you won't notice the smell!

Eventually they will. Right now, there's a domination factor. The big cat is territorial of the litter box to the little one.
Soon, they'll use the same litter box.

I had to convince my husband that eliminating our established male's litter box as soon as we brought our new female home was NOT a good idea. Eliminating is also a way for cat's to mark their territory. The established cat may not take too well to another cat suddenly mussing up his or her space. So go with two....see if they start using the same one....if they do, you can phase out one box. And good luck!

They can definitly use the same litter box. Just keep it clean because some Kitties choose not to go in the litter box if it has not been cleaned.

I have read in many sources that you should have a box for each cat plus 1. I have 1 cat, and 2 boxes. It gives you more security that if one box is in use or seems too dirty for use that the cat will use the other box instead of your carpet, bed, etc.

because of the fact that's the two cats doing it, i think of we are able to properly anticipate that the undertaking is behavioral extremely than scientific. What might have occurred is one in all them went on the mattress for some fluke reason (did one in all them get close in there by risk? Did the domestic dog perhaps chase her in there while she needed to bypass?). even nonetheless it occurred, ow the heady scent is there and that they the two think of that's an ok place to bypass. Lysol won't eliminate the heady scent to them. you want a deep enzyme air purifier, ideally one specifically made for cat urine. Natures Miracle makes a solid one. Soak the place they shop peeing and that i mean completely saturate it. Even turn the mattress over and soak the different section too. Wash all the mattress linens with the enzyme air purifier besides, purely for solid degree. as quickly as the mattress is thoroughly dry, that's fairly useful to contemplate paying for a plastic conceal for it, a minimum of till you're specific the cats are no further peeing on the mattress. now at least, it will make any destiny freshen up much less stressful. Now, place a sparkling litterbox top the place they shop peeing on the mattress. Slowly pass it far off from that spot and to the floor back. with any luck that gets them back into going interior the field. additionally, a solid rule of thumb is to scoop the packing containers on a daily basis and do an entire exchange as quickly as each week. as quickly as a month, empty the packing containers completely and wash them out with cleansing soap and water (no amonia or bleach, that's too solid). i'm specific you realize this already, yet because of the fact that your spouse is pregnant, you or somebody else might desire to take over litterbox duty. even nonetheless uncommon, that's obtainable for toxoplasmosis to be latest in cat feces. now at least, in the journey that your spouse scoops or cleans a litterbox, she might desire to in the present day wash her palms. (additionally be careful of uncooked meats because of the fact that they might have toxo besides.) ABE-HICKS - suggestion like because of the fact of this our shelters are bursting on the seams. Animals stay creatures, no longer toys that would desire to be abandoned the 2nd they grow to be an inconvenience.

The litterbox rule: # of cats +1.
Your older cat may not want to "share" with the kitten expecially if it is new to the territory.
Some cats like to pee in one box and poo in another. That's why three with two cats is a good thing to do.
