The answer is Money if smoking is outlawed then the Federal Government will not be able to collect all the tax dollars that they make off of smokers.

All that outlawing smoking would do is drive smokers underground and start a huge black market for tobacco products. Look at what happened during prohibition. It gave crime a huge boost. It put money in the pocket of the criminals, increasing their power exponentially. I think that we are on the right track by educating our youth. Finally children are starting to realize that smoking is stupid. I do think that increasing taxes on tobacco products is the way to go. That sort of action merely amounts to prohibition light.

Read about Prohibition in the 1920s when alcohol was outlawed. This would only create an underground industry and a new source of business for criminals.

If you outlawed smoking then there would be no tax profits for the government and no profits for the cig companies, but if we keep it legal then the government (or should I say we) pay for the cost of increased health care.

I also can't stand lobbyists...I think they should persuade what they want without any money exchanged for anything.

Because smoking is American Heritage.
Alot of folks smoke to keep insects away.
The indians used to use smoking for medicine.
Smoking is a matter of taste and a free choice.
So, why outlaw something that has been around forever?

Because people who use it aren't chemically induced to commit crimes. This is the main reason why certain drugs are banned &/or have limited access to them. Tobacco smoke is harmful in the same way that auto/diesel/coal exhaust, pesticides, and industrial chemicals are harmful (just more so). Ban smoking and you'll have to deal with all of the other emissions that our economy can't do without.

Because too many people are addicted!
It is a back and forth debate of quatity vs, quantity of life arguement. Look up authors like Florence King she wrote a great article called I"D RATHER SMOKE THAN KISS it is hard to understand at first. It is about people hating smokers, and her hating them, for hating her. She just wants to smoke.
People have simple pleasures as people, and who is anyone to say what those pleasures should be?
I think there is no real reason..........
GOOD QUESTION!

It would violate the 1st Commandment Institution. It will create mass criminal activities as selling tobaccos illegally uncontrollable(exp. of past history when alcohol was outlawed in 1910's(?) ). And further more it's just pure stupid to just blame it as the only source of creating cancer.

MONEY, MONEY!!! It is a money game. Just like alcohol, MOONSHINE is illegal only because the Gov. can't get their cut of the profits! I use to smoke and I thank God above that I had since enough to quit. If someone smokes it is their business until they blow that nasty stuff my direction or the direction of my two little girls. My own mother does not baby'sit my children because she smokes!! I care about my kids and their health. Shame on you parents that hold you little one and smoke them up! They don't smell like babys. only like ash trays....
