I think it's much more likely that, if a universal language ever evolves, it will be descended from Spanish or Chinese.

The trend it to have fewer languages but I don't think it will be only one language. And it will take hundreds of years. And by the way, the languages are live and they always keep changing and incorporating words from each other.
Maybe English will not be that language. If you see history, Roman Empire was powerful at its time. Then, not so long ago, we had French as the diplomatic language and German was the technical language. Now English is predominant but who knows what is going to be next. I noticed that Spanish is spreading very fast in the whole USA but mainly in the South. It is very easy for a Spanish-only speaker find everything in his own language, including official state and federal documents. By the way, neither English nor Spanish are my native language but I can communicate in both.

No, I don't think so because if you trace back in history then you'll see that each period there's another language that seems to be the one in the future. For example, 1 thousand years ago everybody was speaking Greek like English nowadays. To my minf it depends on whether a country thrives economically or not.

Since over one-sixth of the world's population is Chinese, then it wil play a part in the common language, however, with the spread of the internet and hollywood, English has become more accepted in various parts of the world. At one point it was considered the "technical" language.

I don't think so because there will always be people who want to learn other languages- even if English is their native language. There will also be people who won't want to give up speaking their native language. It's what they are most comfortable with and makes them fell patriotic to their country. Would you give up speaking English? I don't think I would. So, no I don't think we will ONLY speak English but everyone might know it and be able to speak it fluently.

Maybe eventually everyone will know english, but I doubt people will let go of their native language that easily because of their sense of nationalism.

Personally I think if people saw that happening it might possibly lead to something similar to the communist movements of the 20th century
