The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an English breed of dog and should not be confused with their larger cousin the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier.

i used to keep staffs they are members of a group of dogs and known here in the U.K as bull breeds and the main ones are

English Bull Terriers
Staffordshire Bull Terriers

These dogs where breed for fighting each other and ratting as a sport, They were renowed for their spirit and unwilligness to give up even when loosing. The English Bull is the bigger of the two and is large and muscly, the Staffordshire is smaller and quicker than the English.
The Pit bull is an American breed and is different from the American bull terrier but are related. Both British breeds are friendly to humans and make good family pets however they have to be watched when meeting other dogs as there fighting instincts are fully active and not many dogs can stand against them

The french also have a version but this is a very small breed and is classed as a Toy dog

I think only 2? the (UK) Staffordshire bull terrier and the American Staffordshire bull terrier (the "amstaff"). I once had an english staffie in England and now I have one amstaff and one pit bull in America. The pit and staffie are a related breed but not the same; the pit was originally bred for fighting and the staffie for showing. They are a related breed as much as the miniature pincher is related to the doberman. People who say that pits and staffies are one and the breed are wrong, check the photo below of my two, the left is a pit bull and has a much wider head and jaw, the amstaff on the right's head is a different shape; he has more of a "forehead" whereas the pit's is flatter and bigger. The pit's ears are somewhat smaller than the amstaff's and the mouth looks different. They both give me kisses the same though!

Staffordshire terriers are a breed. They are called pit bulls as a slang name because in the past they were used in pit fights. American Staffordshire terrier is another dog very similar to the staffordshire terrier but are smaller. Look at the AKC website for more information. They are the final word on dog breeds today. akc.org

Well that is a breed on its own. They are apart of a catagory which is called Pit Bulls. I think there are about 4 or 5 different breeds considered "Pit Bulls". Depending on who you ask.

The Staffordshire Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier or two separate breeds.
