I accidentally set my stereo speakers too close to my tv while cleaning and it now has a giant green/purple discoloration on the side. Does anyone know how i can remove it or if it's even possible?

When you place speakers on top of a television, if they are not sheilded, they will leave a green/purple discoloration as you described. That is the after affects of the magnetic sheild that is output by the speakers. Often times it can be removed through the process of degaussing. Your TV may have a degauss feature built into it or it may be neccessary to have a pro take a look it at. For more information on degaussing, click here

Hope that helps.

Parts of your TV have become magnetized. CRT TVs have built-in degaussing coils which activate every time you turn on the set. This should eventually get rid of the magnetism. However, if you have already turned the set on and off several times and the discoloration is still there, you will have to get the set degaussed externally. A TV repairman should be able to do this at a reasonable cost. You could try to get a degaussing coil and do it yourself, but it does take a little skill to know how to do it properly.

In my experience, sometimes it goes away over time provided you keep the magnet away. I don't know of any other remedies.
