I give three reasons for this:
1) laziness
2) The 'coolness' factor mentioned before.
3) Speed. Everyone seems to be in too much of a hurry to do it correctly so they invent shortcuts. I have tried to spread the word that shortcuts get you nowhere fast, to no avail.
I completely agree that the written word gives a distinct impression of who the writer is and how they think. Using this kind of language, while dislplaying the ability to think, does not impress.
People who use this type of language should practice saying the following phrases:
"Would you like fries with that?"
"Will this be a fill-up today, sir?"
It didn't take me any longer to type this than it does to go with the less-intelligent appearing lingo.

I agree! I get really annoyed by the same things. I've been known to stop chatting with certain friends online because their grammar and spelling irritate me so badly! I have a friend who actually was just telling me about her new "padeow" rather than "patio." I just lied and said I had to go because I knew the next message I typed to her would probably involve the word idiot! It's sad. I even had an English professor once who told the class she had received an essay with the word "cuz" in it rather than "because." So, I'm obviously with you on this issue, English 101 covers a lot of the basics and sadly some people missed it!

You know, I have been wondering the same thing. Although part of the problem may be that some never took any sort of typing course, and therefore only know shorthand because they are more self-taught. But I think it may be mainly related to laziness, sadly. Personaly, I think it almost takes longer to type shorthand, but thats probably because I spent years trying to learn how to properly use a keyboard. Of course there is also the spelling issue. People aren't focusing much anymore on learning how to spell things. Perhaps a forgotton art?

On the one hand, I agree with you, because I pride myself on my grammar & spelling--after being drilled on it in grade school & high school.
On the other hand, I think we need to give people a break. Just because someone uses net lingo or can't spell properly, we shouldn't assume their questions are not valid or that they don't deserve a thoughtful response. Yes, there are some real boneheaded questions, but there are also a lot of people searching for answers. Not everyone has had the benefit of a fine education.

Its just the way they decide to type. Its a new fad to purposely misspell words, and use incorrect grammar because its easier and faster for them to do. Chalk it up to AIM. I actually remember reading an article similar to the question you asked, and it said most kids are using this type of grammar in school and failing..
(I wonder why). It bothers me too. Because I feel like they just don't want to learn correct grammar. lol. what to do?

I'll have to agree with you. It takes me awhile sometimes to read some of these questions. Your also right about the way it impacts the way they are viewed. To me, it sounds like their not very intelligent.

Takes too long to type or they can't spell. Of course there is that little box on the top right.

Could it be that the reason is that for the past thirty-five years we haven't been teaching our children how to write, spell or read English?

it's actually internet/ or computer lingo that is quite popular. at the least its very convenient, almost a form of short hand. i have started using it myself. kids who use it find it cool and therefore continously use it in their school work and adults have caught on as well. it has nothing to do w/ ignorance more or less laziness.
