It hurts on the front of my leg (like a muscle cramp) when I run or power-walk. It feels like I need to stretch, but it doesn't matter how much I stretch; it still hurts. It is making my running routine very difficult!! Is this in fact shin splints, or something else?

I just recently developed shin splints myself. They seem to have subsided some after I stopped my daily walking routine for a few days. I hated to do this, but, I didn't want to make it so bad that I couldn't walk at all. Then in addition to lots of stretching, I have changed the frequency, duration, and speed of my walks. This seems to have helped tremendously, as now the only time I get them is if I've overdone my workout...Also, try massaging your shins before and after you run.

Sounds like shin splints to me. I was in a marathon training club for many years and the recommendation from them is to stand on a curb and carefully let your feet drop behind you so you really stretch out the calves. Also, you will need to take it easy until they heal. Also, avoid the sidewalks and try to run on the asphalt or on dirt.

I usually get shin splints if I walk on a hard surface for an extended time period. It feels like a pulled muscle on your shin. I was told by my doctro to elevate my legs and use ice. Hope you feel better.

You could try running on a softer surface, like a stadium track or grass.

I have also seen cross country runners walk on their heels, with toes off the ground, supposedly to strengthen legs and avoid shin splints.

Amputate your legs above the knee.
