An allowance for what? For fulfilling their obligations to the family? Sorry but I totally disagree with that theory. I think they should be rewarded for extra things or jobs that they do, they should be rewarded for exceptional accomplishements in school but for just doing their assigned jobs in the house, no way. They just do it or they lose what they do have. Not having a chart is NOT the problem here, the problem here is that you don't follow through. You tell them to do something, they don't and you do nothing about it so why would they do it? Maybe you gripe at them a little bit but you dont really do anything that teaches them any lessons. You deal with this by finding their 'currency'...do they like playstation, watching tv, hanging out with friends...find what matters to them and they do what they are told or they lose that thing. YOU ARE THE PARENT, they are the children, as such there should be no such thing as you told them to and they didn't, its simply unacceptable behavior so don't accept it!! A chart is going to do nothing but give them a piece of paper to ignore the same way they do you. I mean really what do you think a 'chart' is going to do? Do you really think they are going to be afraid of a chart? Give the chart more consideration than they do you? You don't need a chart you just say john you take out the garbadge, betty you do the dishes...and thats all there is to it. Every member of a family has a role and a job, that is just your responsibility and you don't get paid for it.

I have a 5yr.old girl and some of her chores consist of refilling dog food, putting toilet paper under sinks, putting rolls of paper towels under cabinet and emptying bathroom trashcans. She helps her sis with the toy room too. They can not go out to play, use phone or computer until their chores are done. First is always homework. Stick to your guns! It will work.

have a chore bowl and than fun bowl-if they pick a chore and do it than they can pick an activity from the fun bowl for ex. 1/2 hour of tv, craft, computer time, or fill the bowl with pennies and every time they do a chore, they get a penny-once they get to 100 pennies means a trip to the dollar store.
