I just recently upgraded to a 50" hp plasma television, obviously I've turned into a major couch potato over the last week. I have also upgraded my DirecTV to the hi-def service. My only gripe is that my local channels are not available in hi-def. I live in Greenville, SC and I know it is, by no means, the largest television market in the nation, but with over 3 million people in the market, it also isn't the smallest. I'm sure I'm not the only person set up for hi-def service, so my question is how can I find if/when my local channels will offer high definition service and who can I contact to start putting a little pressure on the local networks to speed up the process of getting it started.

I checked both the DirecTv website and Googled. Direct shows no upcoming plans, as you probably know. Dish shows they have Greenville in a future plan, but how future is not indicated.

If you can/want to put up a good quality aerial (now referred to as "off-air" antennas) you can receive your locals in HD if your broadcast area has switched over to HD. The individual websites for your ABC, etc., will tell you. Cheaper antennas tend to allow too much bleedover interferrence so that the digital signal doesn't have a chance to come thru properly. Channel Master Crossfire brand is one good example of a decent antenna.

Not sure who you contact to speed up the process. Sorry. Its an expensive and time consuming one with the stations getting the permission, the bandwidth, and all that.

Also keep in mind that your plasma will demand more power and a strong signal if you end up using an outdoor aerial for off-air.

Eventually, DirecTV will provide local channels in HD. It is already available in many areas. Is it possible for you to receive local broadcast with an antenna? The DirecTV receiver has an input for an external antenna and a very good off the air (OTA) tuner. To find out about using an antenna go to http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx You enter your address into this site and it tells you what broadcast stations are available in your area and what kind of antenna you need to get them.

Note that even after DirecTV starts local into local (LIL) service in your area, it will be some time before they provide all the local stations you can get with an antenna. Right now, all they are providing is the major network (NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX) stations in the local area.

Is you TV HD ready or HD compatible? If it is ready, you can get an antenna to get the local channels (if they are broadcasting HD.) If you don't have a HD ready set, then you'll need to get it from the cable company. Where I live, I was getting the very basic package- $9.95 a month and $5 for the HD receiver. I had this for about 5 months until I saw for myself that cable was better. Now, they get all of my money.
