It depends more on who is more capable and at what sort of a battle you are looking at. Squids and Jarheads are mores suited to attacking areas with a small sparsely defended coastline so they can "set up shop". If you are attacking a mostly landlocked country or a majorly defended coastline (Normandy!!) you use Army (airborne operations). The mission dictates who you are going to use. There is no rule that says who goes in first. If you must know though: most operations start with the Air Force.

First of all the term "squids" is the Marines reference to the Navy.
"Jarheads" is the Navy's reference to the Marines.
In most battles the spearhead group is generally a joint force of Navy Seals, Marine Force Recon, and Army Rangers. They are followed closely by a larger contingency of Airborne and seaborne troops. Very rarely does one service go in alone unaided by other services.

They're not. Usually, the US Army's 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions are the first (ground forces) in battle.

see the links below about different US invasions; Grenada, Panama, and Desert Shield where the 82nd (All-American, baby) was the first on the ground

They have specialized training and are the first ground infintry to go into battle. They do that for a living.
It's just like sending an accountant to court. You wouldn't. Let the trained personnel do that.
