My daughter's nails look almost like she smashed them, but she didn't. It's only on about 5 of her fingernails. Up towards the cuticle, it's torn horizontally about halfway through her nail. The beginning of the tear, it looks like someone cut a chunk out, but only on some of them, and from there down it's lifted from the skin. Almost as if it snagged on something, and didn't tear all the way off, but it's still connected at both the sides, and also at the tip of the nail. The color of her nail is normal, and the shape and texture is also good(other than the tear).

Does anyone know what this could be caused from? And if so, how can I treat it at home?

take her to a dermatologist. reading your description makes it hard to envision, but it sounds like a nail fungus or something like that. she needs to see a doc - don't try to treat at home as the problem may only get worse if you don't have the right meds.

you could also try asking the pharmacist though before you make an appt at the doc. they might know what it is and can tell you what to do, but they might also be able to tell you if you really need to have her see a doc. pharms are good for stuff like that. :)

Thats been happening to me the past month or so. I bought nail strengthener...like sally hanson's hard as nails.. and apply it 3 times a week. But remember when you go to apply the strengthener again and again, take off the old very carefully so it doesn't rip again with nail polish remover.

I have only seen this once. There was a kid at summer camp who had a mark like that on his thumbnail. He had a nervous habit of putting it in his mouth and sliding it up and down against his front tooth. He must have done it alot and for a long time. Maybe your daughter has a nervous habit that she does over and over that marks her nails like that, something like scraping them against her teeth?

Sounds like she ripped duct tape with her nails, anyway, put olive oil on her nails at night and they will grow and be pretty.
Stop worrying about em is the main thing.

Sounds like a nail fungus. Get to a dermatologist, which you will probably have to start with your family doctor and get a recomendation to go see a dermatologist.

apparently it somewhat is somewhat elementary... investigate this question from an grownup having the comparable situation... i assume in case you are going to be able to as properly call it a situation :) you're so fortunate... I continuously had to combat with my boys just to trim their toenails!

I would definately take her to someone to check it out - she could be lacking vitamins, which cause them to be weak, brittle and break.
