It depends on the time of year. The winter is the slow season, and room rates are much (sometimes 50%) lower. There are some less expensive hotels and B&B's, but you need to book pretty far in advance. I'm going in 2 weeks for the NY Musical Theater Festival, but I decided late and had trouble getting a room. I've secured a tiny room at the Pickwick Arms in East 51st St. for $149/night. If I had planned ahead, I could have rented a room in a better hotel for less money.

Food can be had for much less money. Deli's frequently have inexpensive buffets, Tad's has inexpensive steaks, there are pretzel kiosks abounding, and little mom-and-pop restaurants (alla Seinfeld) serve meals for a few dollars. To maintain a leaner budget, stay clear of eating in the Theater District or in other tourist sections. Plus, there's always bringing your own granola bars and fruit.

Don't take much cash, but your credit card is your friend here. You can get rooms from $100 to $400 a night and meals will run $30 to $60 a day plus drinks which are quite expensive.
This time of year you can sleep under the stars in Central park if you are broke and down on your luck, panhandlers do quite well despite the reputation of Newyorkers being total a_ _holes.
