Yes but you must use hand signals.
Many pepole with deaf dogs get a shock collar or one that vibrates too. You can use that to get their attention and then give hand signals.
If you use the shock type collar use it on the lowest setting or on vibrate to get the dogs attention and high if the dog is in any type of danger or doing something you wnat it to atop right now.
They are very effective and work better than anything else I have seen used.
One of my firends who also trains has a deaf cattle dog who had earned her CGC award with AKC for being a very well trained dog.

Yes! I would reccommend a reward based training program such as those taught at petmart. These classes are designed to teach the owner how to teach your own dog with a little help and guidance from us. Dogs actually learn better visually than they do through verbal(mainly because we dont speak 'dog' and they dont speak 'english') The hardest thing to overcome is getting your dog to focus on you so that you will be able to give a hand signal. Just be careful never to allow your dog off leash.

absolutely!!! Trainers actually teach owners to use hand signals b/c all dogs respond to these at least as well as they do to words. Be persistent and choose clear and distinct signals(no signal can be too similar to another) and your dog will train as easily as any other. Additionally, I'd use treats, b/c since the dog can't hear you'll need something to maintain his attn while training. Good luck and enjoy this time w/ your dog!

My brother in law has one. He is a great dog, he learned hand signals. if he doesn't want to do something he refuses to look at you. He cant be out without a lead, he could be in greater danger,as he can hear nothing , like cars, or you calling him.

a deaf dog is a major liability, especially with kids who may surprise them resulting in attacks. Be careful.
