It actually doesnt matter how long you leave the food there. Offering food is an act of seeking god's blessings - symbolically the god eats it - after that you can consume it as being blessed by the gods - such food is called 'prasad' or 'prasadam'.

normally brahmins would place the food, take a little water in their palm, kind of sprinkle it around in a circle thrice and wave their palm towards the idol thrice.. as if to say please eat this..

Ganesha do not want food, he wants your loving intention, to realize him , therefore fed the hungry, and try to understand the symbolism Ganesha is representing, formless form is present in its attributes in each and every being.

is it a statue? statues don't eat food. they're made of stone. and i don't think i've ever seen or heard of a rock owning a fridge.

and if it's a god it can probably feed itself. that's the concept of a god. i'm sure Ganesha would be happier if you directed your efforts in preparing his/her meals to preparing meals for those who don't have any food.

it depends on why you're offering?

give it back to the land afterwards.. don't feed it to someone i mean that's a risky situation technically...

all you have to do is offer water right? or are there certain things for certain times????

Leave it as long as you can without it going bad or becoming rotten. Then, if he hasn't taken it, eat it yourself. Since he will NEVER take it, you'll have more food for yourself and your family this way.

why would you offer food to something that can't eat???does that make sense to you?? i am sure it would make little sense to a god either.....you'd do better to leave it for the rats.
