Yes you can, viruses are very resiliant and can survive for a long time outside of a host species. It could have been from eating or drinking something but more likely it is just from touching a hand rail on the stairs or a door knob. Talk to your doctor about what these tests results mean (I can't believe he/she hasn't already discussed what that means). There could be many explanations, too many to list, but it sounds as if you have an infection and if your doc won't give you answers get a second opinion. Good news is whether it is a viral or bacterial infection your body is working to fight it off that is what the increased blood count.

Yes, you can get a virus by ingesting food and liquids as well as just breathing. A virus isn't cureable (most of the time) but a bateria is, which is the most common thing that is spread by food and liquid.

Don't worry a lot about your test because you will probibily go back for a retest. You could have a simple virus thus your white cell count. Do what your doctor tells you, they are the experts.

Only if the food is contaminated, and not "any" virus - only some as certain viruses just don't survive long outside of the body, HIV being one of them. You may have some other condition that has nothing to do with a virus. Sounds like you should have some further testing done - hope you get good results (negative tests). Good luck!

this is not a disturbing white count. You may be recovering from some mild infection, not viral. My last WBC was 12,000
