Hi there...most kittens don't begin to shed until after the average oage 9-12 months. After this age you can keep shedding low and minimize the risks of getting hairballs by brushing weekly. :-)

Normally cats shed with the season and being it is a young kitten he probably hasn't had the cycle of seasons in his life yet..As the seasons change you will notice shedding in the summer and more fur growth in the winter.

After a year or so on a cheap grocery store food your cat will probably start to shed more.
Get a quality food such as CA Natural, Natural Balance, Nature's Variety, Eagle Pack, Innova Evo, etc. which you will only be able to find in a small owner-operated pet store. They are very knowledgeable about good pet nutrition.
Don't use just one food. Switch maybe among three bags of the good stuff. For directions about changing dry foods click on my name at the icon. I use three varieties usually and my cats switch easily from one to another. With kitten you want to avoid any tummy upsets or diarrhea. After he is used to a variety of foods you can just open a bag and it will not cause any problems.

Honestly it depends on the type of cat. Also if the cat spends a bunch of time cleaning its self you wont see much shedding. Then you get those fantastic coughed up hair balls that look like poop. Kitten hairs are different from adult cat hairs. But the basic premis is this, your cat will lose its summer coat in october. It will lose its winter coat from march to may. good luck!

He's still young. There's no certain age to shed. It comes with seasons. When the warm seasons are approaching...that's when he will start to shed. (probably next spring) I used to buy this stuff called "Shed-X" from Petsmart, and it was wonderful!!! You just put a tablespoon in their food daily.
