There are different varieties of collars...shock collars cannot be used on a dog under 8 lbs without risking electrocution or severe nervous system damage. Citronella collars work with some dogs but not with others. I do not recommend either one. At the most extreme they make a wall plug in that emits an unpleasant ultrasonic sound when your dog barks and stops when your dog is quiet. There are other methods to teach your dog not to bark that generally work better than these do though. Please look into a reward based training program for the best information and results. This will take a little time to correct and is not a quick fix. Many of the so called quick fixes are temporary at best. Invest the time and the patience and it will help with the root causes.

Any kind of anti-barking device should be used just as a last resort. Collars do not address the central issue, which is why is the dog barking? Correct that, no more barking.
If you must use a collar, use either citronella or sonic ones, not shock. They hurt and can burn your dog. The others are annoying but not painful.

We used a bark collar on our Bichon pup that liked to yap. It only needs to be used once or twice and they get the message lol. He has had some relapses but the barking collar is the quickest way to correct it without a doubt. Since small dogs are the yappers of course you will be able to find one suitable for your small dog with no trouble.

A bark collar is similar to a training collar. When used properly they can be very effective. If it is used the wrong way it can hurt a dog. As long as it is use properly i don't see why you cant use it.

The sonic collars are safe for most dogs, but Yorkies are known to have major tracheal problems (collapsed trachea) so I wouldn't think it would be a good or safe option..They have to be fitted pretty snug/tight to work..An option that might work is the sonic (high pitched sound) that you attach to a wall..It emits a sound that is irritating to the dog's ears, when they bark more than twice, and gets louder with each bark..much as a clap on lamp works..
You can get them at Dr.s Foster and Smith....Hey! this one might be safe> http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15002&inm=1&N=2001+2017+2032
Or this device will work.> http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=726&N=2001+113215

bark collars are cruel and inhumane!
how would you like to have to wear one and every time you spoke you got a jolt ELECTRICITY through your body???
as a safe alternative if you feel you must stop your dog from barking (btw thats how they communicate) please use a squirt bottle of water. yes it will get the point across to your dog but on the other hand it wont harm him.

hold it to your neck and make it work on you, the sting of the shock is too me for me and I would not use a weapon against my dogs that I could not judge(ultra-sonic). The best way to not have a barking dog is to get a fish instead.

I don't know if I would use one on a yorkie. I would use a squirt bottle with water on one that small.
