Not too soon because then too much tension builds up or she fancies someone else leaving you with no date. Wait about 1 1/2 weeks before. Don't talk too much about the dance. Just play it cool.

anytime after today. you dont want to wait the week before and there arent any dates left. she needs time to find a dress, plus you need to find out what color dress she's getting and get flowers for it, which takes time
