I've been watching the design shows on Dish, there are a lot of products out there that do double duty for a small place, like storage cubes that double as seating, and four of them together make a coffee table, coffee tables with drawers in them, window seats with drawers and cabinets.. They still make Murphy beds, that come down out of the wall, and stow during the day.I saw one show where they built a storage unit on one wall of a two room condo/apartment(one of which was the bathroom), that was a closet, media center, everything that was needed.. And there are tables that fold out bigger for company. If you have a window, choose something that can let light in, but provide privacy, if that is an issue.
Less is more. Choose a couple pictures for wall art, and a couple knick-knacks that coordinate well. Work on having good lighting, and paint the place in light colors. The more you cram into the space, the smaller and more cluttered it will feel. Smaller furniture will give the idea of having more space. Have you seen that TV comercial with the tiny apartment, and the gut climbing over the coffee table? Avoid that. And they make great storage items these days, under the bed units with wheels, clear plastic closet storage that you can see what's in them.
Good luck.

Pick a theme and go with it. Whether its a color, a place, or a collection of the same thing...pick something that makes you feel good. A canopy over the bed is a nice touch, it adds privacy too. A foldout couch can be an added plus when space is an issue. Hang shelves and baskets on the wall. Fresh flowers and hanging plants improve the air quality in confined spaces. Have fun and good luck!

Do you want to make your space look bigger?
Use square mirror tiles! Is the furniture yours or the Landlord/lady? If it is yours you might replace it with say a Small Sofa with drawers
that pullout underneath! By Studio Apartment do you mean Living area run into Kitchen Area?
if so try a small oblong kitchen table.. these are
really ment for a patio but they are ideal in small
apartments. I have one myself with iron wrought legs. I got myself a few chairs to match them. Oh I didn't buy them new I got these at the Local Thrift store! If you're a book
aholic like me you need a book case with drawers at bought that are ment for magazines!
Ikea can help there!

A sofa bed is great and doubles as a sofa during the day, small for one person, full size for two people. A trunk in front can double as a coffee table and also hold bedding and extra clothes not in season. One wall book case that can hold all books, collection,TV, CD player. Nice wooden TV trays can serve as a table and be put away when not in use, or used as end tables,or a drop leaf table that can serve as an end table or for meals if you have the room. Nice folding chairs can be used for extra chairs and put in a closet when not in use.

The rule of thumb used to be: When you don't have floor space, you go "up". Shelves. Lots of shelves. Purchase very inexpensively, or not. Even utility shelving, the cheapest, can be painted the color of the wall to blend in. Then on the shelves, baskets, unusual containers, even huge flower pots that you can get at a garden center, such as WalMart, are great for storage. You can be so creative, and have a lot of fun as well.

Vertical (up), fold-down, multiple use. Cube wall storage and murphy bed and coffee table with storage under it. Under bed storage boxes. Wall mount the TV maybe. Try googling tiny apartments to see what people did with less than 200 sq feet in manhattan. I'm not in a tiny apt, but know people who are.

Everyone's hit the major points here:
furniture that can double for one or two or three needs
Storage pieces, especially that use wall space
light colors (save your favorite bold colors for accent pieces)
mirrors

My ideas:
Art/decorative pieces/rugs that double(s) as space dividers, aesthetically or literally
-bamboo or beaded curtains will allow light to pass through, but define a space
IKEA!
But most of all, Keep it clean!!!

For 4 years in college i lived in dorm rooms that were the size of closets, so I know every trick in the book. Feel free to email me.

First step: line one whole side of a wall with mirrors. It makes the place look (literally) twice as large. You can get mirrors cheaply at warehouse stores like Home Depot.

l when Space(floor) on short supply use your walls. Really very few think of hanging towel bar that holds more than a couple on the wall. This works for shoe trees too. Pots 'n' pans.
